In recent years, the American Library Association has sponsored a National Gaming Day for libraries around the world. Participation in gaming day has grown to more than 2700 libraries worldwide. We named our program “Games Around the World” and it was a terrific event.
Our Friends of the Library funded purchases of puzzles and games and Legos and Duplos as well as donating and requesting donations of gently-used board games. In this day and age of computer games and online social networks, many of our kids don’t think of connecting with each other face to face.
One of the things I discovered when our teen volunteers helped out is that some of them had never played board games. What a shock! Board games are one of the best way to enjoy spending time with your friends and family!
Families are joining in creating Lego and Duplo constructions and playing with Sorry, Jenga, Mancala, Parcheesi, Chinese Checkers and checkers, Connect 4, and many other games and puzzles.
We’re still hoping to find more find more games for our growing events.
Several people have recommended we get Guess Who?, Uno, Pictionary for Kids, Chutes and Ladders, and other early learners. If anyone has any of these, we’d love to use them in our ongoing events. Who knows? Maybe some day we’ll even include electronics!
Come join us for our monthly games day. The next one is April 7th from 3:30-5 pm. You’ll have lots of fun.
And a huge thanks to the Friends of the Studio City Library for being so supportive.
